How’s it thermally? Tolerable when used on the knees?

Pretty cool and quiet. Unfortunately the m.2 NVMe slot is right under the palm rest and I found it kind of warm running with a Samsung 970 in there, so I put in a SATA SSD instead which goes in the drive bay under the keyboard.

Nice one. I’m looking for the next (or next next) tablet generation, to combine portability with that sweet hhkb. Surface Go looks fine, just need to replace an OS)

@dartov The nvme drive ran a *lot* cooler for me once I upgraded to a version of Linux that enables nvme power management - it's really not noticable except under very heavy i/o now

Not yet, maybe soon though.

Beautiful machine.

Its sad how much effort one as to made today to get decent laptop with real 7 row ThinkPad keyboard.

The only alternative (ThinkPad 25th Anniversary Edition) still costs $1700 ... but you can get refurbished for $1100 from ebay.

The absolute madman.

Good stuff mate. I am waiting to save some extra cash in order to get a ThinkPad X1 Extreme second hand in one year time.
I am in no rush whatsoever since my #ThinkPad W530 i7-3740QM has been treating me rather well :).

I suspect I already know the answer, but does the docking port work with the updated hardware? I'd love to swap the internals in my old but well loved X201, but I'm a heavy dock user.

joshua stein (authentic, via ) on september 12th, 2018 at 10:16:35:

No, there is no docking port on the new motherboard and the chassis has a cover in its place.

@steve_mynott Wow. There are a lot of number-letter combos in this missive. Will breathe very deep and try to unpack it all.

@jcs It's the computer equivalent of taking an old, solid well respected car and putting a huge new engine in!

I have open running on my 51nb x62, love it. Just picked up a surface go as well, waiting for qualcom drivers though :)
