i have decided not to sell my r32, after having it on the market for a few months and only being able to drive it about 1500 miles in about 3½ months. i ordered new tires for it today since the toyo t1s' have nothing left on them. i pulled out the rear seats again and swapped in the driver's side sparco seat.

hopefully i will be able to do at least one or two track events this season.

since i had my car for sale on a bunch of sites, i thought i'd mention my experiences with them:

  • cars.com
nice car-detail pages and allows uploading a bunch of pictures. i opted for the most expensive package (i think it was around $50) that put a free carfax link on my page for viewers to run a free report, and allowed me to renew and update the ad for as long as i wanted until the car sold. according to the stats they provided, my ad received about 4000 views. i received a handful of e-mails and phone calls from this ad and would recommend the site.

the search interface is nice and provides a frames-like page that lets one quickly view a bunch of ads in the search results without leaving the list.

  • autotrader.com
crappy search interface with cluttered listings, crappy listing detail. prints ads placed online with the chicago tribune or some newspaper, but the listing is the old-fashioned "LTHR, AC, PS" crap that nobody wants to read. i don't think i received a single lead from my autotrader listing.
  • vwvortex.com
the r32 classifieds forum on vwvortex is just brutal. constantly trolled by gti and other non-r32 owners looking to jump on any thread where an r32 is being sold for more than what they think it's worth, since they know the real value of my car and i'm just retarded.

the zeroforum software vwvortex uses for their forums doesn't allow a user to change the subject of his thread, nor delete it (individual posts in a thread can be removed, but not the entire thread even if you started it). so don't put a price or specific mileage in the thread subject since you won't be able to change it without starting a new thread. and don't engage in debate with anyone about the price of your car within the thread or you won't be able to delete any of it later.

on a car forum you're probably better off just posting pictures and telling users to send private messages/e-mail for pricing info and talk to them off of the forum.

  • ebay.com
i considered listing my car on ebay but they take a large chunk of the sale price and after looking at the recently ended auctions for r32s, none of them ended above their reserve prices. i think ebay is more for people looking for good deals on cheap cars. the buying process probably puts off a lot of people who aren't going to make the effort to go look at a car only to have to bid on it and possibly not win, or have to buy a car without seeing it first.
