last night after getting back from chicago, i felt like installing my oil temp gauge that came in the other day. initially i wanted to install it in place of the light switch since it's a pretty close fit and i wouldn't have to get a nasty a-pillar mount. however, after i took everything apart and started running wires, i realized that relocating the light switch would not be fun.

i took everything back out and started modifying the air vent so i could install it in there, like the boost gauge was in my a4. i hacked up all of the plastic bits and dremel'd out the cavity for holding the gauge, but i didn't like how it was turning out.

so, i went back to installing it where the light switch was. as i was cutting a wiring harness to let the light switch harness hang down lower where i would eventually relocate it, i cut into one of the wires in it. doh. once everything was fixed, i ran the wire to the temp sensor that would have to be installed in the oil pan. that was not fun, since i had to route the wire around things so it wouldn't touch any hot parts and melt.

then came the actual temp sensor installation, which was just a replacement oil plug with the sensor built into it and a wire connector on the end of it. i had to remove the stock oil drain plug and quickly put this one in without losing too much oil. it didn't thread right away and in the end i lost about a quart of oil. luckily i had another fresh quart left in the garage. but now everything is installed and working correctly. i just have to tidy up the relocated light switch.
