i have to use gimp once in a while and while i like the program and have used it for years, i have to lodge a complaint about a recent (?) change that is present in the 2.2.7 version i am using. why did the file open/save dialogs get so retarded?

to open a file i am presented with a list of directories in my home directory, but none that start with dots, and for some reason there are no files shown in the home directory. to view the list of files, i have to click the "Home" button at the top of the list, which just refreshes the same list of directories in my home directory, but now shows the files in it.

to show files and directories starting with dots (which are apparently considered "hidden" now) i have to right click the list and check "show hidden files", which of course never gets saved, so i have to do this every time i bring up this open dialog.

also, there is no text box where i can just type the name of directories. other gtk+ open dialogs have this and even feature tab-key completion. so instead of just typing "pub<tab>.med<tab>" to get into my list of images in ~/public_html/.media/, i now have to:

  1. scroll the list of directories to "public_html"
  2. double-click the directory
  3. right-click the list of directories
  4. choose "show hidden files" from the menu (which is the only thing in the menu, why not just have a checkbox somewhere else on the dialog?)
  5. scroll the list of directories back up to the top (why?!)
  6. double-click on ".media"

who decided that this dialog was easier to use than the standard gtk+ one?
