i replaced the phatbox in my r32 with a dension ice>link/ipod. it's nice being able to listen to music in my office at home, pull the ipod out of the dock, go to my car, plug it there, continue listening to the song where i left off, drive to work, unplug it, put it in the cradle on my desk, and continue listening there.

the phatbox didn't support playing random discs, that is, playing one disc/playlist in order from start to finish, then selecting another random disc/playlist and playing it in order from start to finish. it only did random tracks within a playlist. it's nice having this feature on the ipod since i get to listen to albums i wouldn't normally think to browse to.

the ice>link/ipod start up a lot faster in the car, too. the phatbox runs linux so it would have to power up, boot the kernel, then start playing music. the whole process would take about 5-7 seconds. that doesn't seem like a long time, but it does when you're sitting in a car with no music on waiting for it to come on. the ipod starts playing after about 1.5 seconds.

the only problem i've encountered with the ice>link is that it sometimes doesn't react right away to a next/previous track command from the headunit. the headunit mutes the music for a split second, but the song continues playing for a second until the ice>link responds and changes tracks. (it is getting annoying having to type "ice>link" so i'm going to stop talking about it.)
